Shopping, food, sand and salt water, history and…ghosts?!? Located approximately 2.5 hours (drive time) from Fort Gordon, Savannah and Tybee Island offer a little – or a lot of – something for everyone.
From souvenirs to boutiques to local artistry (available throughout stores, in artist communes and during the many and varied events), shopping in downtown Savannah is always worth the trip. You can stroll along cobbled River Street, meander through downtown, browse City Market or make a couple of days of it and shop it all. If you are looking for unique jewelry, Metals and Paint (facebook.com/pages/Metals-Paint/143068949073396) in downtown Savannah offers interchangeable handmade glass beads, larimar, turquoise and silverware jewelry among many other diverse pieces, as wells as local art.
There are plenty of excellent restaurants to dine at, from fresh seafood to mouthwatering steaks. A more than honorable mention goes out to Flying Monk Noodle Bar (flywiththemonk.com) in downtown Savannah. This Asian fusion dining establishment offers pasta with fresh, local ingredients and exotic spices. For the ultimate in casual, beach-community dining, nothing can compare to Huca Poos Bites & Booze (hucapoos.com) on Tybee Island. With indoor and outdoor seating – well-behaved, socialized dogs are welcome on the deck – they have the best pizza south of the Mason-Dixon line. And if you want to kick back and enjoy a pint or two, the Britannia Pub (facebook.com/pages/britannia-british-pub/84901527963) on Wilmington Island offers a pool table, dart boards, allows you to bring food in and they keep a books of menus behind the bar of local restaurants – with delivery to the bar available.
The beaches of Tybee Island offer surfing and body boarding, dolphin watching, fishing, beach combing, sunbathing and relaxation. Nearby restaurants offer a variety of snacks or meals so you don’t have to bring along your own food. And if you feel like getting a little workout you can climb the spiraling staircase at Tybee Island Light Station and Museum (tybeelighthouse.org). It’s a bit dizzying but worth the view.
If history is your thing, enjoy waterways to squares, mansions to forts, Revolutionary and Civil War landmarks or investigate “America’s Most Haunted City” through Savannah’s (savannah.com/activities/sightseeing-tours/) wide variety of sightseeing tours.
Don’t forget to visit Old Fort Jackson (chsgeorgia.org/OFJ), Fort Pulaski (nps.gov/fopu/index.htm) on Cockspur Island or Oatland Island Wildlife Center of Savannah (oatlandisland.org), just to name a few others not listed above.
Fair warning though, once you visit Savannah and Tybee Island their magical and alluring surroundings will keep you going back for more.
