Gold Star Spouses Day

By: Sheri Buchanon

Military spouses provide unwavering support, stability, and courage on the home front, ensuring their loved ones can serve our nation with dedication. Among them, Gold Star Spouses—those who have lost a partner in the line of duty—carry an immeasurable sacrifice. Each year on April 5th, Gold Star Spouses Day serves as a time to honor their strength, remember their fallen heroes, and reaffirm our commitment to supporting these families.

History of Gold Star Spouses Day

The tradition dates to World War I, when Families displayed blue star banners for active Service Members. If a Service Member was lost, a gold star replaced the blue, symbolizing their sacrifice. Over time, this recognition expanded:

·         1936 - Congress designated National Gold Star Mother’s Day (last Sunday in September).

·         1947 - Gold Star Wives of America was founded to support surviving spouses.

·         1980 - The organization received a federal charter from Congress.

·         2012 - The U.S. Senate officially recognized April 5th as Gold Star Spouses Day to be inclusive of all spouses.

Recognizing Gold Star Spouses

Gold Star Spouses wear a Gold Star Lapel Button, approved by Congress in 1947, as a visible symbol of their loss and sacrifice. The Army continues to provide long-term support through Survivor Outreach Services (SOS), offering counseling, financial education, and benefits coordination.
